16) Patrick Stewart, Extras
Ricky Gervais’ Extras was a series built around fantastically twisted cameos from respected actors.
Daniel Radcliffe, Robert De Niro, David Bowie and Kate Winslet all turned in simply genius performances as wacky cartoon versions of themselves, always replete with movie star insecurities and unhealthy obsessions with fame.
Patrick Stewart’s appearance as himself really takes the cake in the guest star department however.
There’s just something so unbelievably entertaining about watching a world-renowned, knighted actor wax on about how much he loves naked women.
Gervais’ character takes a risk and invites himself into Stewart’s trailer in the hopes of pitching him a film script. Stewart is polite and receptive to Gervais’ ideas, and then kindly offers a few of his own.
He really wants to star in a film from an idea he had, where he plays some sort of superhero with the ability to make women’s clothes fall off. That’s it. That’s his movie.
Sir Patrick Stewart’s entire script is just him contriving different ways to watch women get naked. Gervais reacts with to everyone with his trademark awkward silence, trying to decide if Stewart’s too crazy to give him the big break he needs.
It’s a brilliant piece of comedy between two geniuses of their craft, and Stewart handles all the silliness with every ounce of dignity befitting an actor of his stature.
