2. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (1983)
This British-Japanese drama film, that is also known as Furyo (which is Japanese for “Prisoner of War”), was directed by Nagisa Oshima and it was based on Sir Laurens van der Post’s experiences as a Japanese prisoner of war during WW II as depicted in two of his books.
Bowie plays the protagonist, Maj. Jack ‘Strafer’ Celliers, the androgynous New Zealander prisoner of war in this amazing Oshima’s war drama about forgiveness, friendship and compassion.
The interesting thing about this movie is that Bowie here has a lead alongside another unique persona from the music world – Ryuichi Sakamoto, one of the biggest Japanese musicians of all time. All the more reason to watch this movie right now.
