2) Duck Dynasty
Capitalizing on the hillbilly reality show trend that has proven quite effective in Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Duck Dynasty focuses on the Robertson family, which has achieved great success in the duck call business. Although its stereotypical portrayal of the Bible Belt family has garnered plenty of criticism, the show has managed to break several ratings records for both A&E and cable television in general, achieving a remarkable viewership of 11.8 million for its season four premiere.
Although several episodes of Duck Dynasty have delivered knockout ratings, difficult days may be ahead. In late 2013, Phil Robertson created a media firestorm during an interview with GQ, in which he made remarks deemed both homophobic and racist. Initially, A&E opted to pull the series, although pressure from fans convinced the network to reverse this decision. Robertson’s remarks had a lasting effect, however, with rating dropping significantly in 2014. Currently, the status of the show is in question, as Robertson has once again been engaging in anti-gay tirades, much to the chagrin of otherwise dedicated viewers.
